Traveling when you have a food allergy can be a pretty scary thing. I have created several tips here to help avoid a possible interaction and to make traveling go smoother!
1. Book a hotel or place to stay with a Kitchen. This is a very important thing for someone with food allergies. If you get a kitchen in your hotel room then you can avoid having to eat at as many restaurants. It can be tricky when you are in a new area with different restaurants then you are used to. You never know what the restaurant cooks with and whether it contains your allergen! Having a kitchen in your room will allow you to cook your own food that you know is safe and as an extra perk will save you a lot of MONEY on your trip!!
2. If you need to eat at a Restaurant be aware of their allergen menu. If avoiding a restaurant is not an option make sure you have read a copy of their allergen menu so you know that the food you are eating is safe. You can get copies of the restaurants allergy menu’s on their websites and check out our restaurant allergy guides section HERE! I have created a book of the allergy menu’s that my family would eat at and I make sure to take that with me in the car whenever traveling to know whether the restaurant is okay or not before getting there.
3. Avoid Restaurants that you are unsure of!! This is a big one… If the restaurant does not offer an allergen menu to read eat somewhere else! It is not worth taking the risk of having a reaction (especially if you have severe reactions). Many restaurants will send you a copy of the allergen menu if you email them even if they do not post it on their website!
4. Pack allergy friendly snacks. Especially when traveling with kids it is a good idea to pack your own snacks. You never know when you may be stuck somewhere for longer than expected and get hungry. This way you will have allergy friendly foods on hand at all times!
